This program provides users with access to over 100
interactive "lessons" aim at improving your auditory, visual, and
auditory-visual speech perception skills. Eleven different talkers, with a
variety of speaking styles and accents, present the training materials, which
are divided into four groups: (1) vowels, (2) consonants, (3) stress,
intonation and length, and (4) everyday communication. You can select the
materials which you wish to train with, and then work through at your own pace.
Works for beginners and more experienced lip-readers.
Brings to lipreading training an important feature; true
interactivity. Users are not forced to follow a single path through the
material, even users with no computer experience can easily explore the large,
rich variety of lessons, talkers and speech examples.
Each lesson can be used in practice or
test mode. In practice mode, the user selects the word or phrase to be
presented. The user can practice any of the utterances as many times as desired.
When the user is ready, the system can easily be put into test mode to evaluate
proficiency. In test mode, the program presents a speech utterance and the user
responds by clicking on the associated button. The users accuracy in identifying
the examples is recorded and saved in the computer. The lessons range from
individual vowels and consonants to running speech. Training is enhanced by the
ability to repeat a presented speech example as many times as needed. Examples
can even be repeated in slow motion, allowing users to examine details of lip
movements and other visible speech cues.
